Seven Asian and African countries have
been named as the key exporters for
supplying child camel jockeys to the UAE.

ministry in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

announcement yesterday.
Addressing a press conference here,
Major General Saif Al Sha'afar, the
ministry

undersecretary, said Pakistan,Bangladesh, Sudan, Mauritania,
Eritrea, Somalia and India were the main
culprits who exported child camel
jockeys to the UAE.
Citizens of all these countries have
been told their dependants must carry
their own passports by next month if
they want to travel through UAE
immigration counters.
According to Maj Gen Al Sha'afar, the
practice of putting children's names in
parents' passports has been misused by
many to smuggle children to work here as
camel jockeys.
On Sunday, the ministry signed a
memorandum of understanding (MoU) with
the United Nations Fund for Children (Unicef).
Under the agreement, Unicef will assist
the UAE in rescuing and repatriating
child camel jockeys. The MoU was signed
by Maj Gen Al Sha'afar and June Kunugi,
the Gulf representative of Unicef.
According to the ministry, 45 per cent
of child camel jockeys were brought here
by uncles, 30 per cent by cousins from
their mother's side and 9 per cent by
their parents' friends.

{The tiny jockeys who compete in camel
races are victims of a horrible slave
trade. They are beaten, mistreated and,
in some cases, sexually abused. They
have been kidnapped or sold into slavery
as mere infants. In addition to enduring
inhumane living conditions and beatings,
the boys are intentionally starved to
keep their weight down. Weak from
undernourishment, some are maimed or
killed while trying to pilot the
1500-pound camels.
