I have read the article on your website about Mr Jabir, my husband is now in a similar situation. He owned an oilfield inspection company in Dubai but needing a new partner and sponsor was approached by a local. A sum of money was agreed for the partnership but he insisted on a friend becoming sponsor.
The partnership agreement was signed in April 2002 but no full share capital was paid but from that date he started to demand money from the company as Accounts Manager of the company I controlled all payments. When I began to question these demands he become abusive both physically and verbally.
In October things came to ahead and whilst on leave in the UK he informed my husband it would be safe for me not to return as he could not guarantee my safety. He then employed another Accounts Manager and a separate accounts package was set up and my husband was then slowly forced out of the office however he still was able to control the finances as joint signatures were required on the bank account for all transactions.
My husband came home for Christmas vacation to see his children and on his return mid January he was locked out of the office and the police serve a charge on him from the Arab accusing him of taking monies from the company. My husband has been fighting this case since then and the court have employed an expert who have investigated the company accounts and found that he was entitled to the monies the judgement on this case is on 29th March.
The Arab has also been languishing in jail since June 2003 as we have discovered that he had taken out many bank loans to funds his expensive lifestyle and had hoped our taking our company would help the repayments unfortunately he
didn't realise my husband would fight back. The problem is that he has good lawyers helping him so although he is in prison they are still
helping him.
On the 16th January 2004 my husband was arrested due to non payment of finance on the company vehicle which the arab's family had stolen, of which my partner had reported the theft the previous August and the arab had continued to make payments until that time. He was sentenced to 4 months in jail.
After reading Mr Jabirs article I am now concerned that although he is innocent for these crimes he will still be punished and he talks to the other prisoners and the stories they tell are frightening.I am able to talk to him eveery week but the longer hes there his will is being broken he talks of being there for another two years. I know you cannot help me as I am british and you are interested in prisioners from the asian community but there are not many people I can turn to.
The British Embassy have been no help at all, I feel so alone. Thank you for highlighting the great injustices that happen in the U.A.E, these things are never mentioned in the glossy magazines encouraging people to go there.
They started as pirates and theives continue to be so in the 21st century.
