I have read 'My Prison Life' on the website suggested by you and it seems it was very likely Al Wathba Central Prison my friend was incarcerated. The description of the food, the stifling heat, lack of ventilation was described in much the same way.

(Ms. Sigrid Borke forwarded some information from her friend in Australia.)

"....First he was interrogated for about an hour, names, nationality and so on. Later a higher official came and had a black hood put over him and he was bundled into a car. He was not told where he was going to and when they arrived it was impossible to tell if it was a prison or a police station." Full Text

I am not certain of the name of the prison, however a friend was detained for six mon ths for crossing the border without papers.

He described the prison as ten corridors and 10 cells coming off each corridor. overcrowding was horrendous something like 40 people per cell. Also it had one section for people like himself, mostly refugees and the other section for so called criminals or long term prisoners. All different nationalities.

I am documenting some of this for a book and am very keen to know the name or anything more about it. My friend doesn't know the name, only that it was in Abu Dhabi. I can give more info on condition generally, but would appreciate if this rings a bell for you and if you have any further information.

Having lived in UAE and having witnessed the gross injustices particularly to the poor and innocent workers from South East Asia and I appreciate the effort you are putting into this web site. Keep up the good work.

I’m a reporter with the Ottawa Citizen newspaper in Canada. I am trying to find out which Canadians are in jail in UAE and on what charges. Our government says there are 16 Canadian nationals currently in the UAE justice system, but won’t give out names. Can you help?   Ottawa Citizen  (613) 235-6685; (613) 720-3399 (cellular)
